Black and white is the safest bold decision in tiling. It has been used in entrance halls, dairies, bathrooms and kitchens for a hundred and fifty years, and it still looks deliberate rather than dated — because the contrast does the work, not the colour.

Our range runs from true Victorian geometrics in Dover White and jet black, through hexagon and octagon-and-dot mosaics, to plain squares you can lay as a chequerboard at whatever scale the room can take.

Getting the scale right

The single biggest decision is tile size, not pattern. A narrow hallway is usually better with a 100–150mm chequer or a geometric border; the pattern repeats often enough to feel intentional. A large kitchen or garden room can carry 300mm squares or more, where a small chequer would read as busy. If you are unsure, chalk the grid on the floor before you order.

Which black, which white

Blacks vary more than people expect — a true jet reads graphic and modern, while a softer charcoal or a slightly mottled black sits more comfortably in a period house. Whites run from brilliant to a warm off-white like Dover. Mixing a brilliant white with a soft black, or the reverse, is usually the more forgiving combination in older properties where nothing else is pure white.

Grout changes everything

On a chequerboard, grey grout is the usual choice: it flatters both colours and disguises the traffic that a white grout will show within a season. On black-grouted metro the grout becomes the pattern, so keep the joint even and the line width consistent. For heavily used hallways an epoxy grout is worth the extra work.

Where it works

Hallways and porches first — this is where the pattern earns its keep and where a period property expects it. Then kitchens, utility rooms and boot rooms, where it hides a great deal. In bathrooms, keep the pattern to the floor and let the walls stay quiet, or the room will feel smaller than it is.

Checkerboard hallways, monochrome geometrics, black-grouted metro. A palette of two that has outlived every trend since the Victorians, because it answers to the architecture rather than to the year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose black and white tiles for your home or business?

Black and white tiles remain one of the most timeless design choices for both modern and traditional spaces. Their classic contrast creates instant impact while maintaining a sense of balance and sophistication. Whether you want a bold monochrome floor, a chequerboard hallway, or a crisp bathroom scheme, black and white tiles are endlessly versatile. They work well with other colours too — acting as a backdrop for pops of bold accent shades or natural materials like wood and metal. Many people love them because they add visual interest without overwhelming a space. In commercial settings like cafés, boutique shops or hotels, black and white tiles deliver a smart, stylish finish that feels elegant and welcoming. At Hyperion Tiles, our range includes everything from traditional Victorian designs to contemporary geometric patterns, so you can achieve the exact look you want with enduring appeal.

Where can black and white tiles be used?

Black and white tiles are incredibly adaptable and can be used in almost any room in your home or commercial project. Classic chequerboard floors are perfect for hallways, kitchens, dining areas and cloakrooms, adding character the moment you step inside. Smaller black and white mosaics work beautifully in shower enclosures or as splashbacks, creating a striking focal point. Victorian-style patterns are popular in entrance paths and porches, giving period properties an authentic finishing touch. They’re equally effective in modern settings where bold geometric designs can transform living areas or open-plan spaces. Many of our black and white tiles are made from durable porcelain or ceramic, which means they’re practical for high-traffic areas, wet zones or outdoor pathways too. However you use them, they bring a crisp, timeless feel that complements both traditional and contemporary styles.

Are black and white tiles easy to maintain?

Yes, black and white tiles are generally low maintenance and practical for busy homes or commercial spaces. Porcelain and ceramic versions have a hard, non-porous surface that resists stains, moisture and everyday wear. Regular sweeping and mopping with warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner will keep them looking their best. With patterned or high-contrast tiles, routine cleaning helps prevent dirt settling in grout lines — using a good grout sealer can help here too. One of the reasons people love black and white tiles is that they hide minor marks and smudges well, unlike plain light or dark surfaces that might show everything. Whether you have a bold geometric hallway floor or a classic bathroom splashback, you’ll find these tiles are just as practical as they are stylish, delivering long-lasting good looks with minimal fuss.

What styles and patterns are available in black and white tiles?

Our black and white tile range covers a huge variety of styles, from timeless Victorian and Edwardian patterns to contemporary geometrics and mosaics. Classic chequerboard floors remain a favourite for hallways and kitchens, while encaustic-look patterns and Moroccan-inspired motifs add personality to bathrooms and cloakrooms. For a more modern feel, you might choose hexagons, herringbone layouts, or bold graphic prints that create a striking visual feature. Mosaic sheets in black and white can be used for shower floors, splashbacks or niche details, adding texture and a touch of luxury. Some designs combine matte and gloss finishes for extra depth. Whether you prefer vintage charm, art deco flair or clean, minimalist lines, black and white tiles offer countless ways to add character and contrast to your interior or exterior space.

Are black and white tiles suitable for wet rooms and underfloor heating?

Many of our black and white tiles are made from porcelain or high-quality ceramic, making them an excellent choice for wet rooms, shower enclosures and bathrooms. Their non-porous surface means they resist moisture and are easy to clean, while their durability ensures they stand up to daily use. For floors, many designs are slip-resistant too — particularly important in wet zones. Black and white tiles also work well with underfloor heating, as porcelain and ceramic conduct heat efficiently and help distribute warmth evenly. When installing tiles with underfloor heating, it’s best to use flexible adhesive and grout and follow the heating system’s instructions for gradual temperature changes. This combination of practicality and style means you can enjoy the timeless appeal of black and white tiling with the comfort and efficiency of a heated floor.

Can I see samples before deciding on black and white tiles?

Absolutely. We always recommend ordering samples so you can see the true colour contrast, pattern scale and finish in your own space before committing to a design. Black and white tiles can look quite different under various lighting conditions and alongside your existing fixtures, so it’s worth checking them in natural and artificial light. Samples also help you feel the surface texture, whether you’re considering a smooth gloss, a matte encaustic-look, or a textured mosaic. At Hyperion Tiles, we’re happy to send you samples from our wide range and can provide advice on grout colours, layout ideas and how to combine patterns if you want to create a unique statement floor or feature wall. Seeing a tile in person makes it so much easier to visualise the finished result and choose the perfect fit for your project.

Black and White Tiles: Classic Contrast, Timeless Impact

The Black and White Tiles Collection at Hyperion Tiles celebrates the enduring appeal of monochrome. This timeless pairing of opposites brings bold contrast, clean geometry and design clarity into any room. Whether you’re drawn to the drama of Victorian patterns, the crispness of checkerboard layouts or the sophistication of modern minimalism, black and white tiles never go out of style.

Suitable for floors and walls in both residential and commercial spaces, this collection offers a refined aesthetic that works beautifully across a wide range of design styles.

Explore High-Contrast Tiles for Bathrooms, Kitchens and Feature Spaces

Black and white tiles provide structure, rhythm and visual punch to any space. From striking hallway floors to heritage-inspired bathroom walls and gallery-style kitchen splashbacks, these tiles offer incredible flexibility. Our range includes patterned porcelain tiles, geometric mosaics, polished finishes, matt surfaces and classic square or metro formats — all carefully curated to suit both period properties and sleek modern homes.

Perfect for Statement Floors and Feature Walls

One of the most popular applications of black and white tiles is the floor. Create timeless impact with a classic checkerboard design in a hallway, kitchen or cloakroom. Alternatively, opt for heritage-style encaustic patterns to add elegance and historic character to bathrooms or boot rooms. On the walls, black and white can be used to define zones — such as a shower area or behind a hob — or to create full feature walls with striking geometric or Art Deco flair.

These tiles add definition and depth, turning everyday surfaces into a style statement.

Ideal for Period Homes, Modern Interiors and Eclectic Spaces

The versatility of black and white tiles lies in their ability to adapt. In traditional interiors, Victorian-style floor tiles and decorative mosaics echo historical charm. In modern spaces, sleek gloss finishes and clean-cut patterns offer minimalist elegance. For more eclectic homes, combining black and white tiles with pops of colour or mixed materials creates bold, confident interiors that feel layered and curated.

Whether you’re after a look that’s traditional, transitional or contemporary, black and white tiles fit seamlessly.

Various Materials, Finishes and Layout Options

Our collection features high-quality porcelain, ceramic, and mosaic tiles in a variety of finishes — from high-gloss sheen to soft matt and textured surfaces. These tiles are available in multiple shapes including squares, rectangles, hexagons and more intricate patterns. This allows for endless layout possibilities, from herringbone and basketweave to classic grid formations or diagonal installations.

You can choose a subtle effect or opt for strong contrast depending on grout choice and tile layout.

Durable, Practical and Easy to Maintain

In addition to their striking design potential, black and white tiles are highly practical. Made from durable materials suitable for both wall and floor use, they perform well in high-traffic areas, wet zones and underfloor heating systems. Their non-porous surfaces are easy to clean and maintain, making them an ideal choice for busy family homes, boutique hotels or stylish commercial premises.

This combination of beauty and resilience makes them one of the most popular tile choices across interior design projects.

To help you select the ideal design, we offer free cut samples of our black and white tiles. This allows you to compare shades, finishes and pattern scale in your own environment before committing.
